What is a Charter School?

Charter schools are tuition-free public schools that were established to provide additional choices to families for learning environments that would improve student achievement (A.R.S. § 15-181). Most public charter schools are operated independent of local school districts by either non-profit or for-profit entities, although school districts may also sponsor charter schools. Since 1995, the number of charter schools in Arizona has grown to over 500 and charter school student enrollment has grown well over 150,000 students, accounting for 14% of the student population in Arizona in FY 2014.

What is an Online Public School?

Online public schools are tuition-free options for students who would prefer to learn outside of the traditional school environment.  Students can even receive special education services.

There are more than 40 approved online schools and programs available throughout Arizona!

What is a Magnet School?

You can also choose magnet schools. These free public schools allow kids to narrow in on a specific learning track, such as health sciences or the performing arts. At a magnet school, all subjects are taught through the lenses of that specific track. These might be a good option if your kid learns best by focusing in on a subject he or she is passionate about!

There are many magnet school options in Arizona. For instance, the Tucson Unified School District in Arizona currently lists fourteen magnet schools. These include schools that focus on communication arts, dual language, STEM, Montessori, and gifted study.
